Around 90% of all startups fail. The traditional approach to building a startup - ideate, incorporate, build, and then validate - has a few flaws. There is a better way to build meaningful companies.

Intro
In the world of startups, where every founder believes their idea is the next billion-dollar breakthrough, the real challenge lies not just in innovation but in ensuring that the innovation truly resonates with human needs. My journey from a teenage coder to the founder of multiple SaaS companies and now leading Builders Startup Studio has been a testament to the power of human-centered design and strategic validation in creating impactful businesses.
The pitfalls of traditional startup development
Reflecting on my early days, I embarked on the entrepreneurial path driven by the excitement of creating digital solutions. However, it soon became evident that developing a product without thorough validation was akin to shooting in the dark. I witnessed firsthand how products, despite being technically sophisticated, failed to make a significant impact because they didn’t address a real, pressing need or missed the mark on what customers truly valued.
This realization was a pivotal moment, leading me to question the conventional startup development process. The traditional approach — ideate, incorporate, build, and then validate — has a glaring flaw: it overlooks the critical step of ensuring the idea solves a genuine problem for real people. It’s a path that often leads to the sobering statistic that 90% of startups fail.

A new approach: human-centered development and strategic validation
Driven by the desire to flip the script on startup success rates, I delved into the concept of a Startup Studio. This model, grounded in human-centered design, emphasizes the importance of deeply understanding market pains, unsolved problems, and emerging trends before even thinking about incorporation or product development.
At Builders Startup Studio, we prioritize people over products. We start the journey by identifying significant market needs and matching them with the right founders. The cornerstone of our approach is validation — engaging directly with potential customers to refine and pivot the idea based on their feedback. This is not a mere step in the process; it is the process.
Validation as a human process
Our methodology involves founders conducting over 100 conversations with potential customers to dissect the features that matter most to them. This intensive validation leads to the creation of a working prototype within 20 weeks, significantly reducing the risk and uncertainty that comes with startup development.
The beauty of this approach lies in its ability to pivot based on real human insights. For instance, our journey with developing an OKR software startup underscores the power of validation. Initially, our prototype did not resonate with potential customers. However, by digging deeper into what truly mattered to them — finding joy and satisfaction in their work — we pivoted to focus on managing team well-being, leading to the creation of Noon, a startup that aligns with genuine human needs.
Beyond code: Creating impact through human-centered design
My message to developers and tech talent is clear: You have the potential to make a profound impact beyond coding. The Startup Studio model empowers you to step into the founder role, armed with the tools, community, and support necessary to navigate the complexities of startup development successfully.
This approach not only elevates the chances of success but also ensures that the businesses we build are deeply rooted in solving real problems for real people. It’s about moving beyond the allure of a billion-dollar idea to create solutions that truly matter, driven by a clear vision and a deep understanding of the human element behind every technological innovation.

A call to action for future founders
As we chart a new course for startup development, the journey ahead is filled with opportunities to make a tangible impact. If you’re inspired to bring your ideas to life in a way that truly resonates with human needs, the Startup Studio model offers a pathway to success that is both meaningful and sustainable.
I encourage you to explore what’s right for you, to find that intersection between your passion, your values, and the needs of the world around you. It’s at this crossroads that true impact is made.
